Cobie Smulders is an actress who is known for her role as Robin Scherbatsky in the sitcom How I Met Your Mother. She’s also starred in many movies, including her role as agent Maria Hill in Marvel movies. She also knows a thing or two about resilience. She was diagnosed with ovarian cancer at age 25. She underwent multiple surgeries while starring in How I Met Your Mother and did not make her diagnosis public until several years later. Now, she's teamed up with Colgate because she wants kids to learn skills that can help them be resilient. She's concerned about the mental health health of young people following the pandemic, and she's launched a campaign to ensure young people are learning the skills they need to thrive during uncertain times. Some of the things she talks about today are why hope is such an important part of resilience, how nature improves her mental health, and why she apologizes to her kids (even though her parents never apologized to her).

Jane’s guest today is the sensational Cobie Smulders, a Canadian superstar who became universally known in America as Robin Sherbatzky on CBS’s long-running How I Met Your Mother, on S.H.I.E.L.D as Honcho Maria Hill, and as Lisa in the Netflix comedy Friends from College. In moviedom, she stars in the Avenger series --- including the upcoming Spider-Man: Far From Home. But what her legions of fans might not know about Cobie, is that at the age of 25, she was faced with a shocking diagnosis of ovarian cancer. Shortly after, she underwent several surgeries and has now been in remission for more than 10 years. Cobie’s experience as a successful survivor is still quite unusual. Many women don’t know they even have ovarian cancer until it’s already in advanced stages. Unfortunately, the majority will see it return. Understanding the need for education among women with this type of cancer, Cobie has partnered with TESARO, an oncology-focused biopharmaceutical company, on a campaign called “Not on My Watch.” They have combined, in a nationwide movement, to empower women with recurrent ovarian cancer to take proactive steps in managing their disease by making informed decision with their healthcare providers about their treatments. On this segment with Jane, Cobie, wife of TV star Taran Killam and mother of two young daughters, speaks about her experience with ovarian cancer, her advice for others, as well as her inspiring public service announcement she both directed and starred in that benefits survivors of any cancer. Furthermore, she shares the personal lifestyle tips and tools that keep her happy, healthy, and Better Than Before.

Today's guest is actress Cobie Smulders. You may recognize Cobie from blockbuster films like The Avengers, The Avengers: Age of Ultron, Captain America: Winter Soldier and Jack Reacher: Never Go Back. She'll also be in the new Spidey film Spider-Man: Far from Home. I've been a fan of Cobie's for a while now. Her ability to jump from mega-blockbuster to ultra-low budget indie film has always fascinated me. One of the main reasons I wanted to chat with Cobie was to discuss her new film Alright Now. What makes her new film unique is that it was shot 100% Improv-style, just like I shot my film This is Meg and On the Corner of Ego and Desire. I wanted to see why an actress used to shooting big studio tentpoles would be attracted to making a low budget improv indie in the UK. What was her experience being out there acting with no net. Also what it was like working with Jamie Adams (who will be a guest in the show soon), the writer/director of Alright Now. Here's a bit about the film: ALRIGHT NOW follows Joanne (Cobie Smulders, “How I Met Your Mother, Avengers”) a rock musician who drunkenly enrolls in college after she breaks up with her boyfriend and her band falls apart. Convinced she will give the youngsters a run for their money, Joanne is shocked to discover that no one knows who she is and they could care less about her rock star past.
