  • Ep 2: Numania and The Decade of Darkness. feat. Gary Numan, John Rocca (Freeez), & Peter Murphy (Bauhaus)

Gary Numan has gifted Beggars Banquet their very first number one. So why is neither he nor the label happy? We step inside the intense backlash that comes with fame, as a painfully young Gary Numan tries to make sense of sudden superstardom. Plus, Martin Mills scrambles to define Beggars Banquet as more than just one very big artist… which brings us first to John Rocca’s delightfully unpunk electro pioneers, Freeez and their massive NY club hit, I.O.U, and then to something altogether more sombre. Peter Murphy introduces us to Bauhaus, the band who announce the dawn of Beggars Banquet’s ‘decade of darkness’. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

  • Exclusive Interview: Gary Numan on His UK Success, U.S. One-Hit Wonder, and Finding Peace
    Professor of Rock

Up next, an interview with Gary Numan about several songs that shook radio in different parts of the world. The first one, Are Friends Electric, was a hit in the UK and it came from an out of tune instrument that was written as a science fiction story about the future one that seemed far fetched in the late 70s but one that is a reality now about android hookers… and back then it sold a million copies then the second song Cars was a hit right in middle of soft rockers like Christopher Cross, and Olivia Newton John and this song could’ve have been more different. It was strange and epic, and it came from an incident of highway anger. Gary Numan cut someone off in traffic and almost got pummeled because of it. It became his only hit in America, even though he had many other brilliant hits. He got so sick of it, he resented it. He began to detest it, and then, years later, another legend made him realize he was being a huge baby, and he was grateful for it. A great interview with a legend is next. • Echoes Podcast: Gary Numan Interview

Gary Numan and Earth's Revenge: The Echoes Interview Gary Numan paints a dystopian nightmare where earth takes revenge for a civilization that has fostered environmental and military catastrophe. Musically, his new album, Intruder , it’s a long way from his hit single, “Cars,” but listen close and lyrically it’s not. We ponder the apocalypse with Gary Numan in the Echoes Podcast .
