This week the guys are joined by book reviewer and Cold Coffee Press founder James Holohan to talk about the intense performances of Paul Dano. Though still young in white male character actor terms, Dano has amassed an incredible body of work in his two decades in the film industry. His debut in 2002's L.I.E proved to be his breakthrough into indie film and led him to Sundance success in Little Miss Sunshine and a BAFTA nod for Paul Thomas Anderson's oil based western There Will Be Blood. He has worked with the likes of Steve McQueen in 12 Years A Slave, Rian Johnson in Looper, Kelly Reichardt in Meek's Cutoff, Bong Joon-ho in Okja and Denis Villeneuve in Prisoners. In 2018 he directed Wildlife which starred Jake Gyllenhaal and Carey Mulligan and which Dano co-wrote with his partner Zoe Kazan. In 2021 he will appear as the Riddler in Matt Reeves' The Batman. In a week of remarkable cinema releases, we discuss two of the year's most acclaimed films, Steve McQueen's 'Widows' and 'Wildlife', directed by Paul Dano, who we also spoke to for this episode. Paul Dano’s debut feature as director is set in 60s Montana, and follows the small town separation of Jeannete and Jerry, played by Carey Mulligan and Jake Gyllenhaal, and their son Joe who gets caught in the firefight. With 'Widows' Steve McQueen, one of the most interesting voices in contemporary British cinema directs a vital reimagining of the 80s TV drama of the same name. McQueen's crime-thriller transplants the story to modern-day Chicago and ups the ante, with Viola Davis shining through in an ensemble cast of widows who follow their husband's footsteps into crime after a botched job. When the guys heard about Paul Dano's directorial debut, "Wildlife," they both admitted to pre-judging it as good-bad: a period piece, a troubled marriage, a child bearing witness to fighting. But much like the characters on screen, the film revealed itself to be much more nuanced than they had imagined. Today, we dive deep into this quiet Richard Ford adaptation and discuss the multitudes therein: a captivating Carey Mulligan, a simmering score, and a director clearly influenced by the greats he's acted for (PTA, Rian Johnson, and others). Then, Chance gets on the phone with Paul Dano to discuss his process, his collaboration with Zoe Kazan, and a few shots fired Dano wants to take back re: establishing shots and the Los Angeles Lakers.
