Since she was a teenager with her sisters in The Pleasure Seekers in the mid-60's she has been on stage, singing, playing her bass and proving that she rocks hard, no matter what box you may try to put her in. Suzi's new album Freedom is available for purchase and download and it's a rocker from start to finish. The title track is the lead single and she discusses how she and her son wrote that one and how she immediately knew it was a new anthem for her. They bring back that old Detroit raunchy-rock riffing with Suzi's unique voice on songs like Here's Ya Boots, Nobody Held My Hand and Shakedown and she even teams up with fellow Detroiter Alice Cooper on the MC5 classic Kick Out The Jams (and yes, Suzi says the expletive after Kick Out The Jams). Hear not only about how she made this record, one of her best in years, but about her long career, about moving to England in 1971 alone, touring the world, making fun of nerdy interviewers, being a mom and being her unstoppable, determined self. In this show we have part one of an interview with a complete superstar, the one and only Suzi Quatro. There is an unusual beginning as Suzi began mistakenly talking to me about Dempsey and Makepeace for a good 5 minutes before the audio you are about to hear. I wasn’t sure if I misremembered the Minder episode for a moment as she was talking about doing her own stunts and having a dead look in her eyes as she was so interested in serial killers. June 2020: When Suzi Quatro burst onto the music scene in 1973 there were almost no women in rock and certainly none who played bass, sang lead vocals and completely rocked. A trailblazer, she re-wrote the rule book for women in rock & roll and went on to sell more than 50 million records. Fast forward to 2020 and Suzi has added other strings to her bow – she’s an author, actress, radio-presenter and a poet and now, ‘Suzi Q’, a documentary of her life has been released with the promise of a film on the way. Amongst other things, we chat about Suzi Q. Suzi Quatro and L7's Donita Sparks are iconic rockers who have each paved the way for generations of women in music. And on today's show — for the first time ever — they meet! To celebrate the theatrical release of the documentary Suzi Q , which Donita appears in, as well as the L7 doc L7: Pretend We're Dead and new LP Scatter The Rats , the two chop it up in a wide-ranging, rapid fire convo. They talk refusing to "do gender" when it comes to their music, while also knowing when to pull what they call the “female card” and charge a “pussy premium” for their work. We also hear about Suzi's astrological studies; Donita’s time-travel crush; Suzi’s life mantra — in lyrics — and what she's gonna do to get ready when it comes time for her to kick the bucket.
